About Smith and Thomas
In August of 1984, Mary Smith, Emmanuel Smith, John Thomas, Eddie Moses, Eric Smith and Margie Woods broke the locks on what is now known as Smith and Thomas Funeral Home on Madison Street. On October 01, 1984 the doors were officially opened, and Smith and Thomas Funeral Homes, Inc. grew from one funeral home into four, until the sell of the third funeral home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Mary Smith is the sole owner of three funeral homes, and is the only African-American female in the Chicago land area to own three funeral homes. Through the years she has operated under the mantra of being “People Who Care”, not only for client but for her employees and community. Therefore in April 26, 2012 Ms. Smith was awarded the Woman of Excellence plaque by the Chicago Defender. The City of Chicago also recognized Mary Smith’s accomplishments and service to the community on November 7, 2013 by honoring her with a street sign in her name.
Ms. Smith would like to extend her gratitude for all those that have participated in the success of Smith and Thomas Funeral Homes Inc. She could not have done it without you; please continue to support and grow with us.
