History
Smithville is also the nearest town for the final shoot-out between law enforcement and the famous tax fugitive Gordon Kahl on June 2, 1983, in which Lawrence County Sheriff Gene Matthews was also killed. Highway 117 running east to Black Rock and southwest to Strawberry. Smithville sits at the cross roads for Western Lawrence County. Smithville lies a few miles south of the actual shootout location. The county seat was later moved to Powhatan in 1869, after the Civil War.
