It was officially incorporated as a town in 1908. The population was 1,389 at the United States Census, 2000 census.
Originally called Orr, Kersey was created in 1882 as a place on the Union Pacific Railroad main line between Julesburg and LaSalle. In 1973, the nearby Latham Reservoir broke, flooding a significant portion of the town and causing major damage. Kersey is a Colorado municipalities#Statutory_Town town in Weld County, Colorado County, Colorado, United States. The area was given its current name in 1896 by John Kersey Painter after his mother's maiden name.
