Kihei originally was named Kama'ole, which translates to "barren." The area of Kihei was once considered a barren, dry, unappealing location. Because of the lack of rain, the area had less diverse foliage than its neighbors. Toward the end of the 1900's water was piped in from Central and West Maui, and Kihei was transformed into a vibrant town, where residents and tourists alike took advantage of its 10 miles of beautiful beaches.
