During Hurricane Katrina, on August 29, 2005, the eye of the storm passed by Empire, and the area was entirely flooded, but the Empire High Bridge was not damaged by Hurricane Katrina. The population was 2,211 at the 2000 United States Census census.
During the afternoon of August 28, 2005, Hurricane Katrina approached the northern coastline of the Gulf of Mexico, generating tropical force winds along coastal areas of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.
