The town is named after Johann Friedrich Oberlin.Oberlin was the home of Ernest S. Clements, a Democratic member of the Louisiana State Senatre and, later, the Louisiana Public Service Commission. He ran unsuccessfully in 1944 for governor of Louisiana.
