Canaan is a town in Somerset County, Maine County, Maine, United States. Barrett was also president of the spiritualist summer meeting Camp Etna in nearby Etna, Maine Maine. There is a stone memorial to Barrett in Barrett Park in Canaan. Barrett (1864-1911), the first president of the National Spiritualist Association, editor of the spiritualist newspaper 'Banner of Light', and an author of books on spiritualism. The population was 2,017 at the 2000 United States Census census.
