Cape Newagen, at the southern tip of the island, was an early European fishing outpost. . Southport is a New England town in Lincoln County, Maine County, Maine, United States. Southport was part of Boothbay, Maine Maine until it separated on February 12, 1842. Originally called Townsend after Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscount Townshend Townsend, the name was changed to Southport in 1850. The population was 684 at the 2000 United States Census census.
