APG was created as a successor to the Sandy Hook Proving Ground, which was too small for some of the larger weapons being tested. The installation lies on two peninsulas separated by the Bush River (Maryland) River. Its northernmost point is near the mouth of the Susquehanna River, where it enters the Chesapeake Bay.
