The town has five villages within it: Montague Center, Montague City, Turners Falls, Massachusetts Falls, Millers Falls, Massachusetts Falls, and Lake Pleasant, Massachusetts Pleasant. The Turners Falls Canal through Montague was one of the first canals in the United States, and important in early transport along the Connecticut River , and Lake Pleasant was a prominent Spiritualism (religious movement) campground. The population was 8,489 at the 2000 census. Montague is a New England town in Franklin County, Massachusetts County, Massachusetts, United States. It is part of the Springfield, Massachusetts Springfield, Massachusetts metropolitan area Statistical Area.
Originally inhabited by the Pocomtuc tribe, the area was known as Peskeompskut.
