History
Today the town is mostly a quiet rural community, known for its scenery and natural beauty. The town was officially incorporated in 1797, and was supposedly named for the land's resemblance to the Duchy of Savoy in France. Joseph Smith even preached in the town around 1810 before beginning his westward journey. It is part of the Pittsfield, Massachusetts Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town started off with a grazing agrarian industry, before several mills took off in town.
