The Grand Trunk Western Railroad depot, built in 1884, now houses a library branch. The village is within Gaines Township, Genesee County, Michigan Township.
The Village of Gaines did not see a settler until 1856. The population was 366 at the 2000 United States Census census. The first passenger train passed through the future village site on July 4, 1856 and a post office was established that same year. .
