History
It is seven nautical miles (13 km) northeast of the central business district of Las Vegas, Nevada Vegas. Nellis Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base located in Clark County, Nevada County, Nevada. Lieutenant Nellis was killed on December 27, 1944, during his 70th mission, while flying his P-47 Thunderbolt on a ground support mission during the Battle of the Bulge near Bastogne, Belgium. It was named in honor of P-47 pilot 1st Lieutenant William Harrell Nellis, who was killed in WWII during the Battle of the Bulge.
Nellis Air Force Base was named in honor of 1st Lieutenant William Harris Nellis (1916-1944) on April 30, 1950. .
