History
The town became the "Town of Tioga" in 1818 by switching names with the current Owego (town), New York of Owego, so that the Owego (village), New York of Owego would be in the town with the same name. The population was 4,840 at the 2000 census.
The Sullivan Expedition of 1779 passed through the area. The first permanent settlers arrived around 1792. The town, formerly organized in 1788, before Tioga County was established, as part of the "Old Town of Chemung," was renamed as "Owego" in 1791, when the county was created. Tioga is a town in Tioga County, New York County, New York, United States.
