Johnson, who was of mixed African American and Native Americans in the United States American heritage, was the subject of the biographical book 'The Fabled Dr. Roy Johnson of nearby Murfreesboro, NC. Another well-known resident was the Hoodoo (folk magic) root doctor Jim Jordan, who died in the early 1960s. The population was 78 at the 2000 census.
The town is notable for being the birthplace of Richard Gatling, inventor of the machine gun. The church he attended, Buckhorn Baptist Church, is still active today.
