Sanford is a city in Lee County, North Carolina County, North Carolina, United States. Over the following decades, the Sanford area became an important source of coal, brownstone, and brick. The population was 23,220 at the 2000 census. On creation of the new county, both Sanford and Jonesboro were the major towns in the area.
