The community was named for the English statesman William Wilberforce, who worked for abolition of slavery and achieved the end of the slave trade in the United Kingdom and its empire.

Wilberforce is a census-designated place (CDP) in Greene County, Ohio County, Ohio, United States. Central State University originated as a normal school and expanded to a college and university. Wilberforce University was established in 1856 by the Methodist Episcopal Church and African Methodist Episcopal Church.
