Orderville was established at the direction of Latter-Day Saint leader Brigham Young in 1870 specifically to live the United Order, a voluntary form of Christian_communism#The_Church_of_Jesus_Christ_of_Latter-day_Saints communism/communalism defined by Joseph Smith, Jr. The success and relative wealth of the community attracted more settlers and Orderville grew to about 700 people. During the early 1880s, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints lost interest in the experiment, but Orderville attempted to continue it. Orderville was settled primarily by destitute refugees from failed settlements on the Muddy River in Nevada. Smith.
