History

It closed in 1988. As of the United States Census, 2000 census, the town population was 3,560.

Prior to the arrival of Europeans and during the Woodland period, Pownal was settled by the Mahican people, with other peoples, such as those of the Mohawk nation, traveling across the area. . On January 28, 1760, the Governor of the Province of New Hampshire, Benning Wentworth, granted a charter to the township of Pownal, which he named after his fellow governor, Thomas Pownall, the Governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. During the early part of the 20th Century, Lewis Hine documented child labor in the mills.
