Facts about the city
Ladysmith is an unincorporated community in Caroline County, in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is located along US 1 and SR 639 (former SR 229), northwest of Ruther Glen and 1 mile (1.6 km) west of I-95 exit 110. The community contains attractions such as the Pendleton Golf Club, which is addressed as being in Ruther Glen.

History
During the Colonial Period, Caroline County was the birthplace of Horse racing Horse Racing in North America. Caroline County is also home to Meadow Farms Stables, the birthplace of the renowned racehorse Secretariat (horse) winner of the 1973 Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Racing Crown.
Caroline County was established in the British Colony of Virginia in 1728 from Essex County, Virginia King and Queen County, Virginia and Queen, and King William County, Virginia William counties. Arabian horses were imported from England to provide the basis for American breeding stock. Patriot Edmund Pendleton played a large role in the Virginia Resolution for Independence (1775) and Caroline native, John Penn (delegate) Penn, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence , albeit as a delegate from North Carolina. It was named for Caroline of Ansbach, the wife of King George II of Great Britain.
