History
Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains along the banks of the James River (Virginia) River, Lynchburg is known as the "City of Seven Hills", "The Hill City" and sometimes described as "A City Unto Itself" mostly in reference to the city's historical avoidance of State and Federal entanglements.
First settled in 1757, Lynchburg was named for its founder, John Lynch(1740-1820) Lynch, who at the age of 17 started a ferry service at a ford across the James River (Virginia) River to route traffic to and from New London, Virginia London. For several decades throughout the mid-20th century, the state of Virginia authorized compulsory sterilization of the mentally retarded for the purpose of eugenics. These new easy means of transportation routed traffic through Lynchburg, and allowed it to become the new center of commerce for tobacco trading. The population was 72,596 at the 2008 US census estimate. About this time, Lynchburg was also the preferred site for the Norfolk & Western junction with the Shenandoah Valley Railroad.
