Later, the town saw a boom in coal extraction and sawmilling. It garnered an infamous reputation as a harsh institution, the inmates used for dangerous and brutal manual labor in coal mining and logging. Originally named "Seatco" a native American word meaning evil spirit or devil. The population was 628 at the 2000 United States Census census.
