Harts is a part of the Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). As of the 2010 census, the MSA had a population of 287,702. New definitions from February 28, 2013 placed the population at 363,000.

History
Harts High School existed from the mid-1950s, with its first graduation class in 1958, until 2006, when it was shut down by the West Virginia State Board of Education. Kirk with 458 wins, including two State Championships and one State Runners-up and Kyle G. However, West Fork was named for a man by the name of West, not the direction of the creek.
Basketball put Harts Creek on the map and Harts Creek put basketball on the map. The West Fork of Big Harts Creek is often mis-identified as "East Fork" on maps and in deeds. The theme song for what has become known far and wide as Harts Creek Basketball is "Harts Didn't Come Here to Lose!", words and music by Ronnie Z.
