Hermiston is a city in Umatilla County, Oregon, United States, near the junction of I-82 and I-84. U.S. Route 395 also goes through the center of the city. Hermiston is 7 miles (11 km) south of the Columbia River, Lake Wallula, and the McNary Dam. The population was 16,745 at the 2010 census, which made it the largest city in Umatilla County (and in Eastern Oregon overall), 133 inhabitants ahead of Pendleton, the county seat. The Umatilla Chemical Depot and the Umatilla Chemical Agent Disposal Facility are 5 miles (8 km) west of the city, northeast of the intersection of I-84 and I-82.Hermiston is one of the two principal cities of the Pendleton-Hermiston Micropolitan Statistical Area, a micropolitan area that covers Morrow and Umatilla counties and had a combined population of 87,062 at the 2010 census.The city is known for its watermelons which is part of its branding.

Local residents have laid a mother to rest after authorities found her dead in Hermiston last week. The children and extended family of Hilaria Sanchez, 41, held a funeral mass for the mother of seven at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church Thursday morning.
